Exeter's driving test centre is in the Marsh Barton area on the south-west side of the city, surrounded by trading estates, car dealerships and busy roads leading towards the city centre, Alphington and the A30 and A38. It is a centre where the first few minutes can be surprisingly demanding: industrial estate roads with vans, lorries and customers pulling in and out, followed quickly by main roads and roundabouts.
To give a realistic picture, we looked at the ten practice routes SteerClear has built from the Exeter centre. These are not official DVSA routes, which are no longer published, but they use the local roads examiners draw on and reveal clear patterns.
Exeter routes by the numbers
- Roundabouts: an average of 9.6 per route, so roundabout confidence is essential.
- Speed limits: about 49% of the distance is at 30 mph and nearly 40% at 40 mph, with smaller shares at 20, 50 and 60 mph.
- Length and time: typical routes are around 9 miles and 29 minutes, ranging from short local loops to longer drives.
The large share of 40 mph driving stands out. Many learners are comfortable at 30 but less settled at 40, especially on roads where the limit changes several times. Around Exeter, getting used to 40 mph roads is a big part of feeling ready.
The Marsh Barton roads
Several roads appear on all or nearly all of our Exeter routes: Silverton Road and Thorverton Road on every route, and Bad Homburg Way and Yeoford Way on nine of the ten. These are the roads you use to leave and return to the centre, so you will almost certainly drive them.
Estate roads like these have their own hazards:
- vehicles emerging from business entrances, sometimes with limited visibility;
- parked vans and lorries narrowing the road;
- delivery vehicles reversing or stopping unexpectedly;
- pedestrians crossing between parked vehicles.
Drive these roads at a measured pace, scanning for movement at entrances and around parked vehicles. Starting the test calmly on familiar roads can make a real difference to the rest of the drive.
Beyond Marsh Barton
Other roads that appear regularly include Hennock Road, Alphinbrook Road, Church Road and Topsham Road. Alphinbrook Road connects the estate to the Alphington area and main routes. Topsham Road runs south-east from the city towards the Countess Wear area and has a mix of residential frontage, junctions and changing speed limits.
Some routes also include short sections at 50 or 60 mph. These are a small share of the total, but you should be ready to adjust smoothly to higher speeds and back again.
Roundabouts around Exeter
With nearly ten roundabouts per route, you will meet a range of layouts, from small roundabouts on estate roads to larger, multi-lane junctions on main routes. The key skills are consistent:
- read road markings and signs early to choose the correct lane;
- adjust your speed on approach so you can stop if needed but keep going if it is clear;
- look right and judge gaps confidently, without stopping unnecessarily;
- signal clearly when leaving, and check mirrors before changing position.

Handling 40 mph roads
With nearly 40% of route distance at 40 mph, speed awareness is important. A few tips:
- watch for limit signs as you move between estate roads, main roads and residential areas;
- on a 40 mph road, drive at a safe, appropriate speed up to the limit — hanging back well below it without reason can hold up traffic;
- when the limit drops, reduce speed before the sign rather than after it;
- check your speedometer regularly, especially after a turn or roundabout.
Independent driving and weather
About 20 minutes of the test is independent driving, usually with a sat nav set up by the examiner. Around Exeter, instructions may come in quick succession near junctions and roundabouts, so practise following directions while staying focused. A wrong turn is not a fault in itself if you handle it safely.
Devon weather can change quickly, and wet roads, low sun or reduced visibility affect stopping distances and observations. Practise in a range of conditions so your test day does not bring anything unfamiliar.
Preparation plan for the Exeter centre
- Get comfortable leaving and returning through the Marsh Barton estate roads.
- Do dedicated roundabout lessons on local layouts.
- Practise 40 mph roads until holding and adjusting speed feels natural.
- Include Topsham Road and routes towards Alphington and the city.
- Take at least one full mock test under test conditions, including independent driving.

Manoeuvres and the emergency stop
Every test includes one reversing manoeuvre: parallel parking at the side of the road, parking in a bay (driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out), or pulling up on the right-hand side of the road, reversing about two car lengths and rejoining traffic. Around one in three tests also includes an emergency stop. In Exeter, the quieter estate roads and residential streets away from the main routes are typical places for these, so practise them on similar roads: level and sloping kerbs, parked cars close by, and the occasional vehicle passing while you work. Take your time, keep up all-round observation throughout, and remember that stopping to let traffic pass during a manoeuvre is good driving, not a problem.
