Kings Heath serves much of south Birmingham, and its pass rate is 48% — exactly the UK average. The routes are short and busy: a typical one covers 9 miles in 27 minutes, with around 7.2 roundabouts.
What makes this test distinctive is a split personality. Seventy per cent of the distance is at 30 mph on dense city roads — and then a tenth of it is at 70 mph, on the fast roads at the edge of the routes. Very few candidates practise both.

Alcester Road South
On nine routes, this is the spine of the Kings Heath test and almost certainly your first and last minutes. It is a busy urban high road: buses pulling in and out, parked cars and loading, side roads every few hundred metres, pedestrian crossings and shoppers stepping between vehicles.
The faults here are rarely dramatic. They are late mirror checks before signalling, hesitating when there is a safe gap, following a bus too closely, and creeping past parked vehicles without enough clearance. On a road like this, deliberate beats quick.
The 70 mph sections
A tenth of the distance at 70 mph is a real part of this test, and it catches out candidates whose practice has all been in Kings Heath itself. Joining a fast road means judging a gap and reaching the limit promptly; staying on it means keeping left unless overtaking and leaving a proper two-second gap, which at 70 mph is much further back than most learners naturally leave.
Leaving matters too: coming off a 70 mph road, 30 feels like walking pace, and that is exactly when a 30 mph limit gets exceeded without the driver noticing.
The residential grid
Hawkhurst Road, Stotfold Road, Highters Heath Lane and the streets around them are where the manoeuvre is likely, and where the 20 mph sections sit. Narrow roads with cars both sides mean give-way decisions with oncoming traffic — decide early, signal your intention, and avoid the half-stop in the middle.
The split personality is the difficulty
Most centres ask for one kind of driving. Kings Heath asks for two, and they need opposite instincts. On Alcester Road South the winning behaviour is patience: slow, deliberate, expecting a bus to pull out or a pedestrian to step between parked cars. On the 70 mph sections it is decisiveness: reach the limit promptly, hold your lane, leave a proper gap.
A candidate who practises only the high road arrives at the fast section hesitant; one who practises only the faster roads carries too much speed into the shopping streets. Deliberately alternate the two in your final fortnight so switching between them stops feeling like a gear change.
Timing your practice
Alcester Road South is a different road at 8.30am, at midday and at 4pm — school traffic, deliveries and buses all change the picture. Practise at the hour your test is booked, and give yourself at least one run in the worst of it.
A practice plan for the final fortnight
- Drive Alcester Road South end to end in both directions, at your test time of day.
- Do one session on the fast roads: joining, lane discipline, following distance, leaving.
- Practise the speed transitions — 70 back down to 30 is where the fault lives.
- Work the residential grid for give-way decisions and all four manoeuvres.
- Finish with a mock driving test, scored honestly.
