In Slovakia you learn to drive in a driving school, and only there. The Act on driving schools (93/2005) allows training for a driving licence only at a driving school, so all your practice before the exam happens in the school's car, with your instructor beside you. There is no scheme for practising with a parent or a friend.
That makes the way you use your lessons the biggest thing you control. This guide explains how the driving exam works, who examines you and how to plan your lessons around it.
How the exam works
Driving exams are run by the police. Your examiner (skúšobný komisár) comes from the district traffic inspectorate (ODI), which sets the date and place of the exam. You drive the driving school's training car, with your instructor present.
Under the Interior Ministry decree on driving exams, the practical drive for category B lasts at least 25 minutes. It covers junctions, changing lanes, roundabouts, level crossings and, where the route allows, joining and leaving a motorway or expressway. Many exams also include manoeuvres on a training ground before the drive in traffic; your driving school will know how your ODI runs it.
No published routes
There is no official list of exam routes. The examiner decides where you drive, so the useful preparation is knowing the roads around your ODI well, rather than one loop: its busiest junctions, its roundabouts, the roads out of town and the places where the speed limit changes.
What the numbers say
Police figures reported by Pravda show 89,600 driving licence applicants in 2022 and 67,800 in 2023. The police do not publish pass rates for the driving part, and a police spokesman has said that every driving exam is individual, so there is no national figure to compare. What is clear from driving schools' experience is that confident, well-observed driving on the local roads is what examiners look for.
A lesson plan that works
- Agree a plan with your instructor. Early lessons build control: clutch, steering, smooth braking and moving off on hills. Later lessons should move to the roads around the ODI where you will be examined.
- Cover every situation in the exam. Make sure your lessons include roundabouts, lane changes on multi-lane roads, level crossings and, if your area has one, a motorway or expressway.
- Keep the manoeuvres sharp. If your exam starts on a training ground, practise those manoeuvres in your last lessons too.
- Preview before you drive. Look at the route at home before the lesson, so lesson time goes on driving rather than on finding your way.
- Finish with mock exams. In the last lessons, ask your instructor to give directions only, the way an examiner would, and talk the drive through afterwards.
- Keep a short note. After each lesson, write down one thing that went well and one thing to work on next time.
Common mistakes on the exam drive
- Joining faster roads. Build up speed on the slip road, check your mirrors and blind spot, and merge without stopping unless traffic forces you to.
- Level crossings. Slow down early, look both ways and never stop on the tracks.
- Speed changes. Watch for the signs at the start and end of built-up areas and be at the new speed as you pass them.
- Hesitation. Waiting too long when it is safe to go holds up traffic. Knowing the roads helps you judge gaps with confidence.
SteerClear practice routes in Slovakia
SteerClear has more than 300 practice routes around 55 ODI exam centres in all eight regions, including the five Bratislava districts (such as ODI Bratislava II), ODI Košice, ODI Žilina, ODI Banská Bystrica and ODI Nitra. A typical route is about 18 km and takes just under half an hour, and most include at least one roundabout. These are practice routes on the roads around each centre, not the route an examiner will choose on the day.
Bring SteerClear to your lessons
Pick your exam centre in the SteerClear app and preview its routes at home, so you know where the tricky junctions and speed changes are before you get in the car. At the start of a lesson, show your instructor the route you would like to drive and drive it together, with turn-by-turn navigation and live scoring. The score after each drive shows you both what improved and what to work on in the next lesson, and Mac, your AI driving coach, helps you decide what to practise next.
Find your centre among the 55 on the Slovakia exam centres page, read the Slovak practical driving test guide, and download SteerClear to plan your next lesson.
