The driving theory test in Malta
The theory test is the first step towards obtaining your driving licence in Malta. Administered by Transport Malta, this computer-based examination tests your knowledge of Maltese road traffic regulations, road signs and safe driving practices. You need to achieve a pass mark of at least 35 correct answers out of 40 questions.
Test structure
The theory test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions covering several key areas:
- Road signs and markings — recognition and meaning of all official traffic signs used in Malta
- Priority rules — right of way at junctions, roundabouts and intersections
- Traffic regulations — speed limits, overtaking rules and parking restrictions
- Road safety — defensive driving, safe following distances and hazard awareness
- Vehicle maintenance — basic checks, tyre safety and environmental responsibility
Effective study strategies
Proper preparation is essential for passing on your first attempt. Start studying at least two to three weeks before your test date. Here are proven strategies that work:
- Study the Highway Code systematically — work through each chapter methodically and take notes on key points
- Practise with mock tests — repetition is the key to success. Complete at least two practice tests daily
- Focus on your weak areas — track which questions you get wrong and dedicate extra time to those topics
- Learn road signs visually — group signs by colour and shape to make them easier to remember
- Study priority situations with diagrams — draw junction layouts and practise determining the order of passage step by step
Common mistakes to avoid
Many candidates fail because of the same recurring errors:
- Confusing regulatory signs with warning signs
- Incorrectly applying priority rules at complex junctions
- Insufficient knowledge of speed limits in different zones across Malta
- Underestimating questions about safe stopping distances
- Reading questions too quickly and missing important details
Take your time to read each question carefully. Some answers contain subtle differences that can completely change the meaning. Pay particular attention to words like always, never and sometimes — these can transform the correct answer entirely.
Malta-specific considerations
Driving in Malta has some unique aspects that the theory test covers:
- Left-hand traffic — Malta drives on the left, which affects many priority and overtaking rules
- Narrow streets — many Maltese towns have very narrow roads requiring special awareness
- Roundabouts — Malta uses roundabouts extensively, so know the rules thoroughly
- Tourist traffic — be prepared for questions about sharing the road with unfamiliar drivers
Tips for test day
On the day of your test, a few simple habits can make all the difference:
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment time
- Bring your ID card and booking confirmation
- Stay calm and focused — stress is your worst enemy
- Read each question at least twice before answering
- Skip difficult questions and come back to them later
After the theory test
Once you have passed the theory test, you can begin your practical driving training. Your theory certificate is valid for two years, giving you plenty of time to prepare for the practical test.
