Brecon test centre in Powys sits in the Brecon Beacons where routes combine the small market town, the A40 trunk road, residential streets in Llanfaes, and mountain roads through the national park towards Sennybridge and Crickhowell.
The town centre
A compact market town with narrow streets, on-street parking and pedestrian areas. Lane discipline through the one-way sections is tested. Use the MSPSL routine at every junction and check your mirrors before any change of speed or direction. Watch for pedestrian crossings and keep your speed-limit awareness sharp.
The A40
A fast trunk road with national speed-limit sections, overtaking opportunities and roundabouts at each end of the bypass. Maintain a safe following distance using the two-second rule and use our roundabout guide for multi-lane exits.
Llanfaes
Residential streets with parked cars and mini-roundabouts. If you encounter a dual carriageway stretch, build speed confidently and stay left unless overtaking.
Beacons mountain roads
Steep gradients, hairpin bends and exposed moorland with sheep on the road. These roads require confident country-road driving skills and a secure hill start on gradients.
Independent driving
The independent driving section lasts around ten minutes. Read the road ahead while following the sat nav — a wrong turn is not penalised.
