Bicester has grown rapidly and the roads around the test centre reflect that mix of old market-town streets and new-build estates. Routes take you through the town centre, the ring road with its roundabouts, stretches of the A41 towards the M40, and narrow lanes through villages like Launton, Ambrosden and Chesterton.
The town centre
Sheep Street and Market Square form the core of the old town. The streets are narrow, parked cars reduce the carriageway, and pedestrian crossings near the shops demand early scanning. Apply the MSPSL routine at every junction and check your mirrors before any change of speed or direction.
The 20 mph zone covers the centre. Speed-limit signs change as you leave the zone, so stay alert.
The ring road and roundabouts
Bicester's ring road has several roundabouts linking the A41, A4421 and local roads. Traffic is heavy during commuting hours. Approach in the correct lane, follow the markings and use our roundabout guide for the exit procedure. The Vendee Drive and Oxford Road roundabouts are the ones learners find trickiest — practise them repeatedly.
New-build estates
Kingsmere, Elmsbrook and the Bicester Gateway estates have wide, well-marked roads but include traffic-calming features such as chicanes and raised tables. The examiner watches whether you adjust your speed smoothly through these features without braking harshly or drifting into the opposing lane.
The A41 and M40 approach
Some routes head south on the A41 towards the M40 junction. This is a fast dual carriageway stretch. Build speed on the slip road, merge confidently and maintain a safe following distance using the two-second rule.
Village lanes
Routes heading east towards Launton or north towards Chesterton take you onto narrow country roads with blind bends and limited visibility. Adjust your speed, anticipate oncoming traffic and use passing places. A confident hill start matters on the gradients near Graven Hill.
Independent driving
The independent driving section often takes you around the ring road or through the new estates. Read the road ahead while following the sat nav — a wrong turn is not penalised.
