Berwick-upon-Tweed is England's most northerly town, sitting right on the Scottish border. The test routes reflect its unique geography: a compact walled town centre, bridges across the River Tweed, the fast A1 trunk road and exposed coastal stretches towards Spittal and the Northumberland countryside.
The town centre
Berwick's town centre sits within Elizabethan walls, and many streets are narrow with tight junctions. The MSPSL routine is essential at every turn. Marygate and Hide Hill are one-way, and the examiner expects you to spot the signs early. Parked cars reduce the road width further, so confident meeting-traffic skills are needed.
The 20 mph zone covers much of the centre. Keep your speed-limit awareness sharp — the limit changes as you leave the walls.
The bridges
Three bridges cross the Tweed at Berwick. The Royal Tweed Bridge carries the A1 bypass traffic, the Old Bridge is narrow and single-lane in places, and the Royal Border Bridge is the rail viaduct above. If the route takes you across the Old Bridge, you need patience — priority alternates, and the examiner is watching whether you read the signs and give way correctly.
The A1
The A1 runs through Berwick as a dual carriageway bypass. The speed limit is 60–70 mph, and the examiner wants confident merging, correct lane positioning and a safe following distance using the two-second rule. The roundabouts at each end of the bypass are busy — follow the road markings and use our roundabout guide.
Spittal and the coast
Routes heading south cross into Spittal, where residential streets meet the exposed seafront. On windy days, crosswinds can push the car sideways, especially along the promenade. Keep both hands on the wheel and adjust your speed.
Country roads
Heading west or south, the routes take you onto narrow Northumberland lanes with blind bends, steep gradients and occasional farm traffic. This is classic country-road driving — match your speed to your visibility and be ready to stop. A confident hill start is essential on the steeper sections.
Independent driving
The independent driving section often routes you along the A1 bypass or through Spittal. Read the road ahead while following the sat nav — a wrong turn is not penalised.
