Belvedere Driving Test Centre: Routes, Road Types and How to Prepare

Belvedere in south-east London tests you on busy A-roads, tight residential streets, multi-lane roundabouts and the approach to the Dartford Crossing. Here is how to prepare.

Belvedere driving test centre sits in the London Borough of Bexley, between Erith and Abbey Wood. The routes take you through dense suburban streets, the busy A2016 and A206 corridors, large roundabouts near the Crossway and Erith, and the approach roads towards the A2 and Dartford area. Traffic is consistently heavy, and the examiner expects you to make progress without hesitation.

Residential streets

Most routes thread through the terraced streets of Belvedere, Lessness Heath and Lower Belvedere. Parked cars line both sides, narrowing the carriageway so that meeting oncoming traffic requires confident judgement. Use the MSPSL routine at every junction and check your mirrors before changing speed or direction.

Many streets have a 20 mph limit. The speed-limit signs are not always prominent, so stay alert — exceeding 20 in a residential zone is a common serious fault.

A-roads: the A2016 and A206

The A2016 (Bronze Age Way) and A206 are fast corridors with 40–50 mph limits and multiple sets of traffic lights. The examiner watches your approach to amber lights, your lane positioning and your awareness of pedestrian crossings. Keep a safe following distance using the two-second rule and avoid tailgating in heavy traffic.

Roundabouts

The roundabouts at Erith, the Crossway and near the A2 junction are multi-lane and busy. Follow the road markings into the correct lane on approach, signal correctly and use our roundabout guide for the exit procedure. Do not change lanes on the roundabout without a mirror and blind-spot check.

Dual carriageways

Some routes take you onto short stretches of dual carriageway towards the A2. Build speed on the slip road, merge confidently and stay in the left lane unless overtaking. Crawling onto a fast road at 30 mph is dangerous and will be marked.

Bus lanes and cycle infrastructure

Several roads in the Belvedere area have bus lanes active during peak hours. Check the blue signs for the operating times and stay out of the lane when it is active. Cycle lanes are common too — check your blind spot before crossing one to turn left.

Independent driving

The independent driving section often routes you along the A206 or through the residential streets between Belvedere and Erith. Read the road ahead while following the sat nav — if you miss a turning, the examiner will guide you back.
