Bedford Driving Test Centre: Routes, Road Types and How to Prepare

Bedford test routes combine a busy town centre with the A6 bypass, residential estates in Kempston and Putnoe, and quiet rural lanes. Here is what to expect on test day.

Bedford driving test centre serves a market town on the Great Ouse, where routes take you through the one-way system in the town centre, the busy A6 bypass, residential estates in Kempston, Putnoe and Brickhill, and narrow lanes heading towards villages like Cardington and Wilstead.

The town centre

Bedford's town centre has a one-way system around the High Street and River Street that the examiner uses to test lane discipline and the MSPSL routine. Road markings tell you which lane to be in for each exit, and drifting across lanes mid-junction is a common serious fault. Watch for pedestrian crossings near the shops and bus stops that require you to stop and wait.

Several sections are 20 mph. Keep your speed-limit awareness sharp — the limit changes frequently between 20 and 30 as you move between the centre and surrounding streets.

Residential estates

Kempston to the south-west, Putnoe to the north-east and Brickhill to the east all feature regularly. These estates have parked cars narrowing the road, mini-roundabouts and T-junctions where mirror checks are constant. In Brickhill the roads climb, so a secure hill start is useful if the examiner asks you to pull up and move off on a gradient.

The A6 bypass

The A6 runs around the west of Bedford as a dual carriageway. The speed limit is 40–50 mph for most of the Bedford stretch. The examiner wants to see confident merging, correct lane positioning (stay left unless overtaking) and a safe following distance using the two-second rule.

The roundabouts along the A6 — Elstow, Sainsbury's and the A421 junction — are large and multi-lane. Follow the markings and use our roundabout guide to get the exit procedure right.

Country lanes

Routes heading south towards Cardington or east towards Wilstead take you onto narrower roads with blind bends and limited passing space. This is country-road driving — adjust speed for visibility, anticipate oncoming traffic and use passing places sensibly.

Independent driving

The independent driving section often takes you through the residential estates or along the A6. Read the road ahead while processing the sat nav directions — a wrong turn is not penalised, but a dangerous last-second lane change is.
