If you're learning to drive in Australia in 2026, the rules have shifted significantly. Multiple states have rolled out changes designed to produce safer new drivers — but they also mean more preparation time before you can sit your test.

90% Pass Mark

120 Supervised Hours
Up from 100 hours in several states
What's Driving the Changes?
Road safety data consistently shows that more supervised driving hours correlate with fewer crashes in the first year of solo driving. According to recent reports, the reforms aim to close the gap between test readiness and real-world competence.
The higher pass mark means you'll need to answer 27 out of 30 questions correctly (previously 26). That one-question margin may not sound like much, but it eliminates borderline passes.
Foreign Licence Holders in NSW
From February 2026, drivers holding licences from 16 specified countries must now pass both the knowledge and practical driving test before getting an NSW licence — even if they previously qualified for a direct swap. This applies regardless of age or driving experience.
Senior Driver Framework
A new national framework took effect on 31 March 2026: drivers over 65 must now complete annual health check-ups in certain states, with three-year renewal cycles for those over 75.
How to Prepare
- Start logging hours early. 120 hours at 3 sessions per week takes roughly 10 months.
- Practise hazard perception. The practical test now puts greater weight on identifying and responding to hazards.
- Use real test routes. Knowing your local test area removes surprises on the day.
